Board and Batten

Board and Batten

I've jumped on the board and batten train! My husband went out of town for about 36 hrs...so I thought I could put up board and batten, paint and get the Master bedroom I've dreamed of...all within the 36 hr time limit. Why is it when husbands leave to go out of town, every creative juice starts flowing? I think I can re-do the entire house while he's gone. I also think I'm on vacation and I don't have to cook and we can eat out for every meal. He's home now...so I will cook tonight.

Lowes Home Improvement would not cut my MDF...something about no kick plate and not being able to cut anything less than 6 inches. So I went to Home Depot and, good natured, Mr. Patient, Josh...cut my MDF for me. I did end up getting charged $.25 a cut. That was a bummer. And a quick project has turned into me hammering my thumb nail 47 times. I'll tell you all about how I did it when I show you the finished project. It's 5ft high with 2in vertical strips. I'm painting the top gray.

gray paint swatches

Speaking of gray...let's have a little impromptu contest. Can you guess how many paint swatches of gray I have painted on this wall?? I'll choose the winner of the correct answers, via random # generator. The winner can choose between "The Lazy Girl Slipcover eBook" or "The Lazy Girl Quilt tutorial."

  51. I just have to jump in here and comment about how you do projects while your husband is away. That is me!!! Particularly the part about eating out and pretending I don't have a thousand other things that need to get done! I love your finished product in the next post - what a wonderful job you did. I'm in awe. I need to go to Home Depot right now. Thanks for sharing - I'm fired up to do this!

  52. Well, I have become your newest follower thanks to Amy from Maison Decor who suggested I put some of my slipcovers in your next blog party! I am laughing because I have to do projects when my husband is away because I don't have to ask him what he thinks - he doesn't step in and halt my project for whatever reason (because you have to have v i s i o n when decorating rooms... so it's either I stay up and finish a project late into the night, so it's all put back together when he wakes up, or I do it when he's out of town :) Then everybody's happy! He comes home and says 'WOW, looks great hon!' etc. I have been toying with this whole board and batten idea for a long time now. I need to do it in a room or two in my own home because to do beadboard would just be too difficult to cut around the hot water heat registers. I always wondered how I would merge the existing floor molding with the flat board though, and it seems to look fine on your example!

Oh, so why did you use mdf and not just 3/4" x 3" pine? mdf is SO hard to nail into that I wonder if it was actually made to be nailed into! No wonder you hit your finger :(

Looking forward to future posts. If you get a chance, stop by my blog and see if you might want to follow me back!
